Chi sono i Vigentini / Who are the Vigentini?

The story begins with me (well, this is not entirely the case!), Lorenzo Vigentini, born in Lodi on the September 1975, in the year of the rabbit in the Chinese calendar and under the sign of the Libra for the western zodiac. For those who believe in astrology, many of my traits and characteristics are typical of the Librans, however I think that the year also influenced my personality.

Back to the family story, I have a brother, a bit more than a year younger, and we are very different from each other. As both my parents were single children it is natural to look for similarities with other family members to trace who shares most traits. The four branches of the family closest to us are the Vigentini, Alboni, Giavazzi and Quinteri. At the moment their origins are still unclear and it is my intention to document my research with this blog.

It is certain that the recent history has historical relevance and interesting facts: for example my grandpa Edgardo Alboni took part to the WWII Russian campaign, was a member of the resistance and was elected MP being an active political militant also at local and regional level for many years. The other grandpa, Innocente Vigentini, was the opposite in terms of involvement: he escaped from the fascist conscription and hated the war, possibly because his father died in the WWI campaign. The grandmas both came from the countryside and escaped the poverty and hardships of war to give birth to my parents just after the new republican Italy was born.

And what about me? I left Italy in 1997, originally intending to stay away for a year but ended up staying after facing burocratic problems with recognition of studies and degrees in the newly unified Europe, and was forced to make a choice. The experience abroad changed me, and it offered possibilities which wouldn’t have been available if I did choose to go back. After finishing my undergraduate degree in England I came to Edinburgh where I was awarded a postgraduate diploma in artificial intelligence and where I’m working to obtain a doctorate. In the meantime I had the opportunity to travel halfway through the world, mainly using the excuse to go to conferences and I worked in the USA and Spain. Finally after a bit of struggle I managed to get my first full time academic job in the department of psychology of the university of Edinburgh.
