Valentino Vigentini

Valentino, di anni 30, e possibilmente suo fratello Carlo ([1] il manifesto e' strano in proposito), di anni 31, arrivo’ a New York il 9 Dicembre 1900. Parti’ da Le Havre imbarcato su ‘La Bretagne’. Entrambi sono in buon stato di salute e dichiarano di essere lavoratori originari di Rivoli (TO), di non sapere ne leggere ne scrivere e di essere in possesso di 30$. La cosa strana e’ che Carlo indica l’intenzione di andare dal cugino Veronese, Valentino dichiara di voler andare da suo genero Bersarelli, ma entrambi vivono a Dagus Mines in Pennsylvania.
Dagus Mines, PA era una miniera di carbone e un paese sotto il controllo della Northwestern Mining & Exchange Company. (link)

In questa storia e’ quasi sottinteso che entrambi rimasero in America, come ho pensato fosse il caso di Rosa, tuttavia e’ legittimo domandarsi se invece non siano andati solo a visitare dei parenti.

Anche se questo e’ uno scenario possibile, non credo sia la vera ragione per andare a Dagus mines che era una cittadina costruita per ospitare i lavoratori della miniera. Se avessero voluto andare a fare i tutirsti, sono certo che avrebbero potuto visitare altri posti! Tuttavia non credo che la gente povera si potesse permettere il lusso di una crociera in America al tempo...

Forse hanno usato il paese e i loro parenti come un punto d’appoggio per cominciare una nuova vita: forse hanno lavorato nelle miniere per un po, forse hanno incontrato qualche ragazza americana o forse sono morti la’... tante domande e poche risposte per il momento, ma sicuramente una storia affascinante!

Valentino, 30 years old, and possibly his brother or relative Carlo of 31 ([1] the ship manifest is unclear), arrived in New York on the 9^th of December 1900. He sailed from Le Havre on the ‘La Bretagne’. Both were in good health and declared to be labourers coming from Rivoli (TO). They couldn’t read or write and they declared a possession of $30 each. Quite strange, and this is the reason for doubts, is that both declared that they intended to go to Dagus Mines in Pennsylvani, but Valentino says he is going to hi son-in-law called Bersarelli whilst Carlo said that he’s going to visit his cousin Veronese.

In this story I’m implying that both remained in US territory as I did with Rosa, however is it possible that they were just visiting?

This thought is possible, but not very likely because Dagus mines was a commercial town built around the mines. If they intended to go sightseeing –and I can’t imagine this is the case for poor people at the time going on a cruise to the US- they could have gone somewhere else more appealing. Maybe they used this small town as their base to start a new life, but then they possibly worked in the mines for a while, maybe they met some nice American girl or maybe they died there… many questions and few answers, certainly a fascinating scenario!
